1937 International C-1 Pickup

by the Auto Editors of Consumer Guide

Thank goodness for the 1937 International C-1 Pickup. Like virtually the rest of American industry, International Harvester Company was in dire straits during the Great Depression of the early 1930s. Consider that in 1929 the company produced more than 50,000 trucks, but by 1932, that total was down to about 17,400.

One strategy IH adopted to increase sales in those dark days was to enter the light-duty market -- a strategy that would ultimately produce the successful 1937 International C-1 Pickup.

The 1937 C-1 Pickup helped International rebound from the Great Depression.
The pressures of time and tight money worked against creating a new design from scratch. The answer came from Willys-Overland. In very unstable financial condition and eager to increase sales of its light trucks, Willys manufactured a modified version of its 1/2-ton C-113 pickup and panel trucks that International marketed as the D-1. Though built in Willys' Toledo, Ohio, plant, the D-1 sported its own radiator and hood styling and used a larger-displacement version of the C-113's six-cylinder engine.

The C-1s vee'd grille gave it an up-to-the-minute look.

The D-1 served its intended purpose well. Thanks to its 12,200 units, calendar-year 1933 production of International trucks topped 30,100. But with Willys-Overland
now in receivership and its ability to meet International's needs uncertain, IH turned to a successor of its own design.

On the surface, the International C-1 Pickup was a completely new truck. Cab styling was more rounded at the corners, and the old-fashioned windshield visor of the D-1 was done away with. A vee'd aluminum grille with a body-color shell and more-enveloping fenders with skirts at their trailing edges were up-to-the-minute.

The 113-inch wheelbase, 213-cid six, and standard 4.18:1 axle ratio of the D-1 were retained for the new truck, but there were significant mechanical changes to distinguish the C-1 from its predecessor. A longer 125-inch-wheelbase version of the chassis was added. The propeller shaft gained roller-bearing joints, steering and brake components were enhanced, and there were stronger springs with redesigned shackles. The frame rails were made a half-inch deeper than those used on the D-1.

The C-1's under square engine increased output to 78 horsepower from the D-1's 70.

Though displacement of the under square engine (3.31-inch bore by 4.13-inch stroke) was unaltered, output was increased to 78 horsepower at 3,600 rpm, compared to 70 at 3,400 as developed in the D-1. The compression ratio of the C-1 engine stood at 6.3:1.

Aside from the horsepower boost, the engine benefited from improved ignition wiring. An L-head design with four main bearings, it used a cast-iron block and solid valve lifters and breathed through a single-throat downdraft carburetor. The engine worked through a three-speed manual transmission activated by a floor-mounted lever.

C-1s were produced by IH at its plants in Springfield, Ohio, and Chatham, Ontario, Canada (though the engines were manufactured by the Wilson Foundry & Machine Company, of Pontiac, Michigan). Aside from short-and long-bed pickups, factory-supplied bodies included panel, open-side, and screen-side deliveries. Chassis/cowl units were available, too, and International cataloged a "woody" station wagon with bodies supplied by outside firms.

IH considered its factory-authorized body variations to be options, so most stated prices are for the basic chassis/cowl. But the Standard Catalog of American Light Duty Trucks cites a 1934 price of $545 for a short-wheelbase pickup, which would have been $100 more than the chassis alone. The 125-inch chassis cost $25 more than its shorter counterpart.

The 1937 C-1 also featured hydraulic brakes.

Apart from the arrival of hydraulic brakes in February 1936, the C-1 was produced with little change until April 1937, when it was superseded by the D-2 series. In its three-year run, C-1 production came to 76,820 vehicles.

The light-duty truck line proved to be a substantial part of IH's business; in 1936, when production edged past 100,000 -- quite a jump from dismal 1932 -- nearly a third of that total consisted of C-1s. All the while, International was able to hold third place among American truck producers.

The long-wheelbase pickup pictured here is one of the 6,639 C-1s built in 1937 (274 of which came from the Canadian plant). It features 18-inch steel-spoke wheels (though wire wheels were also available) and an extra-cost right-side taillight.

International Harvester D-2 Serial Numbers.

D-2 series was manufactured at the Springfield Plant in the United States and Chatham plant in Canada. Canadian D-2 series have their own serial numbers and are not counted in the totals below.

I am aware of two sources for serial numbers from International Harvester - the book International Trucks by Fredrick Crimson and Documents in the McCormick IH Collection - Wisonsin Historical Society that were provided by International Harvester Corporation. As of the date of this entry, I am aware of the discrepancy between the two and am unable to research it thoroughly enough to determine which is correct.

International started the serial numbers on the D-2 with #501. The entries in the tables are total numbers produced in that year Thus using Crimson's numbers the serial numbers for 1937 should be 501-28530.

The first table has entries from International Trucks by Fredrick Crimson.
According to Crimson, the total number of D-2s in US was 96,651. If you add the Canadian D-2 truck numbers the total was 101390.

Plant

1937

1938

1939

1940

1941

Total

Chatham

?

?

?

1,271

?

?

For the total production amount of 79,669 --“List of IHC Trucks manufactured”.
Mcc Mss 11z box 5 folder 1,“Trucks – list of models with production dates and production figures, 1908 -1974”. The same total production number is listed in documents folders 2 and 3.

For the starting serial numbers --“International Motor Trucks Beginning Serial Numbers – Calendar year Starting January 1”. Mcc Mss 11z box 3 folder 2, “Serial numbers – motor trucks, 1912-1965 (annual)”.

Also, the MT-38 Parts Catalog for 1938 back of the front cover says Chassis serial numbers for 1937 were 501-35,077 ----Which doesn't match either of the two sources mentioned above.

Crimson gives the Total number of D-2s manufactured in the United States as 96651 and Annual Harvester Reports as 79669 a difference of 16982.

I do not know why the numbers are different. The problem is the offical documents show a specific total made at the Springfield plant and a starting serial number for each year. If you know the starting serial number for the year you can get the true number made in a year by simple math. But, the Offical starting year Numbers minus the total provided would indicate that "1" truck was made in 1940 - this does not seem likely as all other indications are that the D series lasted until the KB line started in the last couple of Months of 1940.
Now back to Crimson - I do not know how deep his research went thus i dont know how he arrived at the numbers he did. Crimson obviously had access to the internal documents from IHC as indicated by the number he lists for D-2s made at Canada's Chatham works in 1940. The number was 1271 and was confirmed by Mcc Mss 11z box 5 folder 6, "Production and Shipment - 1940".

Thus there are two solutions to the problem. Find out from Mr. Crimson how he arrived at his calculations or begin an indepth research of the Wisconsin Historical Society's Archives. Maybe one day if I ever go to Wisconsin, until then I think that i will stick with Mr. Crimson's numbers.
(Special thank you to Ms. Sonia Yaco, Reference Archivist)
A common question was when exactly was my truck made and where are the serial numbers for the truck? I will try and explain serial numbers in more detail later. But for now, generally a quick way to tell if you have a pre-1939 model is to look and see if the winshield cranks out with a "tape". If it is tape ( a flat piece of metal with square holes) it is 1937 or 38, if it is a rod that pushes out the window it is a 39,40, or 41.
The Chassis serial number was stamped on a plate on the passenger side of the vehicle low down on the firewall in the engine compartment. The number was also stamped into the frame on the driver side at the very front just above the front spring hanger.

The D-2 came in 113" (short wheel base) and 125" (long) wheel bases. Also the inside body could be 76 or 88" long.

Brand new the truck cost was $400 to $800.00

The Rubber and Weatherstriping on a D-2 is the same as that of a KB6 as the cabs are the same.
There are several companies out there. The following is from Restoration Specialties (see the links section) and are real nice examples of the weatherstripping you will need. If you just need a piece or two you can take these examples and get what you need from them or or somewhere like JCWhitney or even your local mom and pop glass company.

If you don't already have an Instruction Book for your D2, you should get one - before you buy any service manual. These trucks are fairly simplistic. The operators manual has wiring diagrams, brake diagrams, and lots of other stuff to help you repair and maintain your truck. The big thing is the instruction book will cost you around 25.00 and give you just about all the info you would ever need. Second the service manual is generally $60.00+ and is usually a photocopy of a copy and has lots of extra info on other trucks stashed along with pages for your D-2.

I have PRESERVED a copy of my INSTRUCTION Book that you will find in the Gallery. It's 100 pages including the cover. The photo's number corresponds to the page number for easy reference. This book came with every truck sold by IHC.

You will find on an original IHC truck there no key hole in the handle on the driver side. The driver door can be locked from the inside but not the outside. The key entry is on the passenger side door handle. The reason for this is that back when this truck was manufactured the streets were very narrow and there was parallel parking only. Also, the lights were 6 volt and weren't very bright. The truck company decided that it was hazardous, and it was , to stand in the street and lock or unlock the door. The key was placed on the sidewalk side to keep you from standing in the street.
As a side note, this was also very chivilrous as you had to unlock the passenger side door and if you had a wife or girlfriend you would open the door for her. She could then unlock your door as you walked around the truck to get in - or if she was mad at you let you stand in the street and get run over.
